About us

Ferny Hill Farm is working mixed farm. We have a Beef suckler herd of around 80 animals. They are predominantly Simmental cross cattle which you may have seen grazing the fields if you go walking in Trent Park. We also grow a variety of arable crops including Wheat, Oil Seed Rape, Field Beans and sometimes Oats. We farm a total of around 700 acres in the surrounding area, spreading from Trent Park to the Enfield Ridgeway.

Ferny Hill Farm has been managed by the Wright family since 1966 when Dennis Wright took over the tenancy. At that time the farm was mainly Dairy and poultry and was made up of around 130acres, with the farm shop already up and running. Then in the early 70's Dennis's son Stuart Wright took on the farm and soon added the arable enterprise. Due to dropping prices in milk the Dairy herd was sold in 1981, to be replaced by a beef herd in 1987. Over the years the farm has maintained its mixed routes of cattle and crops and still does to this day.

Farming has experienced some big changes over the past ten years. With the prices for commodities such as wheat, milk and meat dropping to dangerously low levels, many small farmers have gone out of business, being taken over by the larger operators. Other farmers have been lucky enough to diversify into other avenues of business. Ferny Hill is one of these, although the farm is still operating fully, we have been able to open a Tea Room, the farm shop is still supplying people with potatoes and eggs etc. We have an Elizabethan barn we hire out for weddings and parties. And in the Summer months the Amazing Maize Maze is open, attracting 5000 vistors every year.
